Written in 1953, Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel set in a future society where books are banned and burned, with society convinced that the government’s censorship will lead them to a happy existence born out of the suppression of free thought. It follows Guy Montag, a “fireman” who burns books for a living, as he begins to doubt a superficial, media-driven culture that discourages the formation of any meaningful connection. While writing the book, Bradbury drew influence from current and historical events, including the burning of books by the Nazis in Germany and the Soviets of Russia. Farenheit 451 is one of the country’s most frequently banned and challenged books of all time due to its exploration of censorship and conformity as well as the impact of mass media and an all-powerful government on society.
