Sold is the story of Lakshmi, a thirteen year old girl who lives with her family in the mountains of Nepal. When their home is washed away by a monsoon, Lakshmi is told by her stepfather that she must leave to take a job to support the family. After being told the job she is taking is that of a housemaid, Lakshmi learns she has been sold into prostitution. Its depiction of human trafficking, physical and emotional abuse has landed Sold on many banned and challenged lists, but it endures as a story of survival and triumph.
