Sold is the story of Lakshmi, a thirteen year old girl who lives with her family in the mountains of Nepal. When their home is washed away by a monsoon, Lakshmi is told by her stepfather that she must leave to take a job to support the family. After being told the job she is taking is that of a housemaid, Lakshmi learns she has been sold into prostitution. Its depiction of themes of human trafficking, physical and emotional abuse has landed Sold on many banned and challenged lists, but it endures as a story of survival and triumph.
