Identical by Ellen Hopkins follows the lives of twin sisters, Kaeleigh and Raeanne, who are dealing with deep trauma and complex family dynamics. On the outside, they seem to have a perfect life, but behind closed doors, they struggle with the painful realities of their home life. Alternating between the twins’ perspectives, we get to know Kaeleigh as a quiet, reserved, and burdened by her father’s emotional abuse, while Raeanne behaves recklessly as a way to cope with her own pain. Identical is often banned or challenged due to its depiction of self-harm, eating disorders, abuse and family dysfunction.
